Squidgy St Helens Results and Story

Anglers from six states made the trek to Tasmania for the Squidgy St Helens BREAM Qualifier, but it was local Steve Steer who rose to the occasion.

Setting the pace on day one with the heaviest bag of the tournament 5.77kg, Steer weighing in a final bag of 10/10, 9.39kg.

Second place went to Scott Towner (10/10, 8.29kg), third (Chris Wright, 10/10, 7.92kg), fourth (Wayne Friebe, 10/10, 6.95kg) and fifth (Mark Mangold, 10/10, 6.53kg).

Steer used two G.Loomis rods, the DSR802 and SJR720 models matched to Daiwa Exist 2004 reels, spooled with 3lb Berkley Crystal Fireline and finished with Yamatoyo fluorocarbon.

Working an Ecogear SX40 in colour 344 and a Smith Jade suspending 43mm crankbait in brown high up over the flats, Steer would look for the lighter coloured sand.

“The key was to spot the baitfish in pockets of weed in the ruble rock area” Steer said.

“I would crank down the lure, then pause, followed by a pull, pause, tweak, tweak and really mix up the retrieves” he continued.

Towner, however, filled his bag fishing the flats behind the racks.

“As the tide was rising, I presumed the fish would venture from the racks onto the freshly accessible flats” Towner explained.

Using a Berkley Pro Tactic 6’10”, 2-4kg rod and Abu Garcia Cardinal 802 reel spooled with 2lb Berkley Vanish all the way through. Towner slow rolled a lipless crankbait TN50 Jackall in black gold colour, bumping the bottom all the way to the boat. As well as a 6” Gulp Camo Sandworm rigged on a Nitro 1/11 jighead with his ripping technique as seen on AFC.

Taking home the $500 Go-So Big Bream cheque was Leigh McKenzie with a solid 1.62kg specimen. After watching non boater Mark Dunphy upgrade several times, Leigh decided to grab Dunphy’s T-Curve and have a cast. The 100mm Wasabi Squidgy Wriggler was engulfed and Leigh happily played out the fight to claim the fish.

Top placed non boater for the weekend was Shimano’s Brett Wilson with a 10/10, 6.94kg bag. Using a new Bushy’s Stiffy Minnow crankbait, Wilson fished the flats with a twitch, long pause technique.

“These lures are about 5 weeks from hitting the shelves” Wilson said.

Seems to be a sure winner with plenty of fish caught on them this weekend.

We finish our Tasmanian leg on the Derwent River this weekend and are looking forward to some record breaking bags, with many locals promising big things. Be sure to keep up with the latest results by checking www.bream.com.au.
